10/25/2025 Todd Snider (from the album High, Lonesome, and Then SomeTodd Snider (from the album High, Lonesome, and Then Some available on Aimless Records/Thirty Tigers) (by Bryant Liggett)
Todd Snider is a professional slacker Folkie. And that’s written with the utmost praise, as that vibe remains a compliment to his songs, his vocal delivery coming off like he’s holding court in a dimly lit room, offering up pearls of wisdom at his own pace. His latest, High, Lonesome and Then Some, is classic Todd Snider drawl, delivered with a laying it all out with a loosey-goosey, front-porch Blues band. The release kicks off with Snider questioning the human condition in the appropriately titled “The Human Condition” as he offers up admissions and offerings relatable to everyone, including ‘dancing like he don’t know how’. One thing Todd Snider has always done is speak for us all; whether he planned on it or we wanted to hear the words… it happens repeatedly in his stories. “The One, Four, Five Blues” is a stream of conscious, barely-holding-on narrative over a loose bed of Blues, “It’s Hard to Be Happy (Y is for Redneck)” is a more reflective narrative that anyone paying attention to the world can relate to, as Snider is one person that questions happiness when everything around you is a mess, and he offers up relationship advice on who to chase in “Older Women.” It's wonderful. With the backing vocals High, Lonesome and Then Some playing out a Folk Gospel, with Toff Snider being the high priest whose advice and lyrical offerings we should all heed.
