Tobacco City (from the album Horses

Tobacco City (from the album Horses available on Scissor Tail Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
Quiet harmonies, subtle instrumentation, and an overall spaced-out feeling is the vibe for the latest from Tobacco City. While Cosmic Country is a term tossed around for the Chicago band, there is also a similar Denver Sound texture to their latest release, Horses. The twang is subtle but present, and the overall melodic mood is lo-fi and laid-back.

“Bougainvillea” starts the album off with a quick Surf Rock riff before the pedal steel takes over, lazily hovering at the start of the song before the vocals kick in on this dreamy cut asking ‘ain’t it weird when you’re the young one, reckless, stupid, and free’. It’s a perfect memory of youth. “Horses I, II, and III” are separated throughout the album, a triple title track that totals under the four minute mark combined. The songs serve as a sonic interlude between cuts.

“Buffalo” is a Country Indie Rock groover, and the Boogie Rocker of the album, “Colorado”, is a lazy drifter while “Blue Déjà Vu” creeps like molasses as Chris Coleslaw and Lexi Goddard mutter out the great line ‘puts milk in the brandy, to help the brandy go down’. That is just one of many memorable lyrics. While the melodies creep and the harmonies crawl, the latter’s delivery finds one voice a split second behind the other, that imperfect/but perfect balance is ripe for Horses front porch and lackadaisical approach. This is a perfect choice for a late night or lazy morning. An album of how Roots and Country should be presented, where the pedal steel drifts and dreams and the harmonies are a perfect pairing.

I love this record, and it will be in the running for a favorite of 2025. (by Bryant Liggett)
