It’s a record for a few moods. A solid, audio backing for kicking back while watching the world roll by or tossing the record on and going straight for the stories that will help the tears fall into the beers. Them Coulee Boys latest release, No Fun in the Chrysalis, is an audio companion for happy hearts or heavy minds. There is a lazy groove to the album opener, “Change, etc.” as the subtle banjo and pedal steel ramp up the twang; it is however a contemplative cut with an air of the serious. There’s a Big Easy bounce in “Up Close” and Them Coulee Boys combine both killer groove and tender ballad in “As Long As You Let Me”, the line ‘I’m gonna love you as long as you let me’ oh so ripe and ready to have you sing along. “Tomorrow, Tonight” is stripped down, simple and easy on the ears as the band churn out a whipping cut in “I Can’t Turn it Off”, complete with The Beach Boys inspired harmony ‘woo’s’ and stretch into experimental jam territory with “Ghosts (In 4 Parts)”, the cut starting off slow before building in dramatic fashion to a larger band ensemble before exploding into a wall-of-sound jam: it is killer. Wonderfully under-produced and Indie-minded, Them Coulee Boys laid back demeanor and Soren Staff’s twangy croon are all part of their casual sound, accentuated in the superb closer of “I Am Not Sad”, a dramatic way to close out a beautiful and emotional album.
