Making a double-duty toast, The War and Treaty raise a glass for a new album and matters of the heart when the open their recent release, Plus One, with “Love Like Whiskey”. Dramatic piano notes rumble as a four count is the starting pistol that heralds the frenetic charge into “Called You By Your Name” while a determined banjo hops on board wagon-wheel dusty rhythms for “Leads Me Home”. Based in Nashville, Tennessee, husband and wife duo Michael Trotter Jr and Tanya Trotter continue to create modern music, as they have since their 2014 inception, by utilizing vintage styles of Soul, Country, and Rock’n’Roll to hone a sound unique to The War and Treaty. A mighty march walks on solid footfalls with “Mr. Fun” as a tangle of guitar notes partnered with a powerful backbeat propel the pair down “Tunnel Vision” and Plus One marks a length of time counting six minutes to watch love crumble in “Stealing a Kiss”. Michael Trotter produced the majority of the album, recording Plus One at the legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Michael’s touch on the production board channels a lifetime of musical influences into a brand for The War and Treaty as it crosses genre borders to create a breath of fresh air for Country Soul. The backing music builds in “Love Light”, gathering the power of the sound on patient breaths of rhythm that continue to rise to match the vocal prowess of Michael and Tanya Trotter. Playful notes mix and mingle when Plus One delivers the potent pulse that supports the desperation of “I Can’t Let You Go” as handclaps and a triphammer beat ride underneath the choir of voices taking charge of life in “Skyscraper”. The War and Treaty quiet the melody for the memories of “Reminisce”, keeping the pace mellow for the confessions in “Home” as the exit Plus One with acoustic chords leading the way for the Americana mortality march of “The Glorious Ones”.
