A few phases in the collective life of The Vegabonds are reflected in the stories on the band’s recent release, Young & Unafraid. Produced by the band and Tom Tapley (Blackberry Smoke, Pearl Jam) the album hears tales of triumph and heartbreak, missed turns and the joy of redemption when The Vegabonds relive the highs and lows of younger years as well as the decade they have spent on the road as a touring band. Sonically, the album channels the music of vintage sounds such as Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and Eagles while it adds in the firebrand Indie Rock of Kings of Leon. The sound rises up to greet the hammered beat of album opener “Where Do You Have to be Tomorrow” as The Vegabonds walk on piano chords to enter the confessions of “You Never Cross My Mind” while they head “Down to the Eagle” on a determined stride. Musical influences from their youth, and the tracks programmed on the van/tour bus, help soundtrack the songs with hints of Country, Alt Rock, and the blue-collar Rock’n’Roll of heartland America. The Vegabonds are proud of the new recording, sharing that ‘we’ve been playing together since college (Auburn University, 2010) and this album really captures who we are as a band. It felt a little nostalgic making it (the album), like we were sitting around a fire talking about the moments we’ve experienced together over the years; the good, the bad, and the dumb. We hope that everyone can find themselves in these stories and it helps them remember what it felt like to be young and unafraid’. Showcasing those sentiments in words and music the Young & Unafraid title track hops on a Rock’n’Roll backbeat to tell its tale as the album makes plans to “Bet the Farm” on an assured electric strut. The Vegabonds share the fast pace of their past year on the road as they enjoy the ‘clear blue sky on the top of this mountain’ with “Not Today”. Making a wish for a do-over, The Vegabonds step up to the bar in “Till the Hurt Don’t Hurt No More” as they find strength in the glow of home with “Leave the Lights On” and exit Young & Unafraid on a solid groove to soothe the hurt of lost love in “Lonely”.
