The Twangtown Paramours (from the album The Wind Will Change Again

The Twangtown Paramours (from the album The Wind Will Change Again available on Inside Edge Records) (By Lee Zimmerman)

Billing their new effort as their first acoustic Folk album in twelve years — as well as the best collection of songs they’ve ever written and recorded --- the Nashville-based husband and wife duo known as The Twangtown Paramours clearly have raised a high bar for the prophetically-titled The Wind Will Change. Nevertheless, Mike T. Lewis and MaryBeth Zamer have risen to the occasion, not only meeting the standard set by their first three albums, particularly their most recent, Double Down on a Bad Thing  which saw significant chart action in both the U.S. and the U.K.

With an ace team of session players lending their efforts — Rick Lonow of Poco on drums and percussion, Grammy winner Jim VanCleve on fiddle and viola, Rave Tesar, musical director of the hallowed British band Renaissance on keyboards, Ed Alstrom on piano and organ, and Jeff Taylor on accordion — the Paramours have put together a tender tapestry of songs flush with soothing sentiments. “Sincerely Yours No More” sets the tone with an engaging melody and immediate appeal. The sweetness and serenity of “The Garden”, “Old Friends”, “Before She Found A Way”, Stars Without a Heaven”, and “A Room in Bordeaux” affirm that seemingly effortless appeal. VanCleve’s fiddle playing is especially prominent throughout, adding a lovely instrumental additive to Zamer’s quiet, contemplative vocals.

It’s not all about the serendipity however. Lewis takes a whimsical repast for “The Goodwill Store”, while the jocular sound of “Showin’ Off For Their Girlfriends” and a cheery cover of Adam Schlesinger’s “That Thing You Do” elevate the mood while sharing a bit of merriment along the way. A breezy take on Jimmie Dale Gilmore’s “Tonight I Think I’m Gonna Go Downtown” provides another distinctive diversion.
The Wind Will Change Again is a thoughtful, personal pensive pastiche, songs that deal with relationship, realities, and life in general. There’s no doubt this duo has the wind at their backs. (by Lee Zimmerman)
