3/28/2026 The Third Mind (from the album SpellbinderThe Third Mind (from the album Spellbinder available on Yep Roc Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
It sounds like 1967 and like 2026. That description refers to the latest release from The Third Mind, Dave Alvins’s Psychedelic Rock powerhouse of a band that finds the always adept Alvin, a guitar player who can nail Punk to Country to Folk to Jam, leading an outfit that the jam-band fans should eat up. The band’s latest release, Spellbinder, is a fantastic musical concoction of Psychedelic Pop and guitar rippers. The Third Mind are a textbook look-back to the sounds of the summer of love and wide range of psychedelia circa 2026. The band pushes the experimental envelope right out of the gate in the opener, “Spellbinder-Tchad Blake Mix”, rushing in with West African rhythms via driving drums before aggressively, stabbing guitars gently pushing through an full-frontal rhythmic pulse. Jesse Sykes’ vocals are haunting and floating on “Reap What You Sow” along with Dave Alvin’s pushy blues guitar, a perfect pairing. “Before We Say Goodbye” is trippy and dramatic. The nearly 15 minute long “Darkness, Darkness/The Creator Has a Master Plan” starts as a haunting ballad before unraveling into experimental regions with Sykes reminding us of a human need that pushes well beyond hippie ideals. This four-song release is anything but brief. The Third Mind is packing a massive, solid punch, connecting the dots between Acid Test Grateful Dead, Texas bred 13th Floor Elevators, and Sonic Youth, as the anything-goes concoction of sound administered by a trusty guitar guide who knows where the path has come from as well ss someone you’ll trust to get you wherever this Psychedelic bus of an album is going.
