2/28/2026 The Sky Chiefs (from the album The Sky ChiefsThe Sky Chiefs (from the album The Sky Chiefs available as on Chimney Bird Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
It’s been an album thirty years in the making. Stephen McCarthy and Kevin Pittman were kicking around the East Coast, putting together a record that was stacked with jangle, twang, and heavy harmonies. The result a record that was then shelved for thirty-plus years as The Sky Chiefs self-titled release is now seeing the light of day in 2026 with a Paisley Underground throwback that sounds as fresh as the Roots Rock albums of next week. Laid-back jangle and harmonies kick things off straight out of the gate. “House Full of Company” is a mid-tempo Roots Rocker that sonically nods to the early days of Alt Country. “Knocking Out the Daylight” is a punchy cut that hints at Garage Rock (hell, the whole thing has a Garage Rock vibe). “Engines” is floating and dreamy while “What Lonely Means” has a Roy Orbison-texture when the song’s twin guitars come together into inter-woven goodness. “Shine” is a beautiful track that could serve as a lullaby as a crying-in-your-beer cut, “All Broke Down”, is a lazy and loungey cocktail tune. The Sky Chiefs closes out with “Standing in the Light”, a swooning ballad. Fans of harmonies via Everly Brothers, Big Al Anderson guitar fills ala NRBQ, and any Replacements-influenced bands that drift into Country territory will dig on The Sky Chiefs, as it’s a record that keeps great company thanks to a great sound.
