2/28/2025 The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band (from the album HoneysuckleThe Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band (from the album Honeysuckle available on Family Owned Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
Some may call The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band a Blues outfit, but they are so much more. There is a combination Punk and Old-Time texture to the music, an almost Jug Band approach minus the jug, as they remain a front-porch picking-party trio with a knack for the thick and aggressive. A bountiful bunch, doing a lot with a little, their latest release in Honeysuckle is a more-than-solid sampling of Acoustic Rock that seems to bulldoze a path though American Roots music. Coming out of the gate with slow, slide-guitar riffs, the Rev’s croon is hulking and heavy on the opening title track. “Looking For a Manger”, with the McCrary Sisters, digs into the Gospel world complete with church-heavy back-up vocals. “One Dime Blues” features killer picking and a stompy, washboard rhythm section, and they dig into a classic with “Freeborn Man,” the cut charging with foot-stomping rhythms, it’s a solid take of a festival and Roots music staple. “I Can’t Sleep” is slow, Psychedelic, and dreamy while “Let Go” is Boogie-cut and “Mama Do” is a fun and fast closer. There are classic Blues riffs all over Honeysuckle, but all of that comes with a dose of in your face, and in your ears, Rock. This reviewer will put them up against any Punk band in the aggro-department, and their knowledge of the classic American songbook, and contribution of original masters, is a great means of extending the canon.
