The Pinkerton Raid (from the album Jagged Vacance: Winter Songs by Other People, Vol. 1 available as a self-release) (by Danny McCloskey)
Tradition for The Pinkerton Raid frontman Jesse James DeConto begins with his musical resume, and the holiday music in elementary school days, singing carols in church, and recalling ‘those melodies stick with me. “Silent Night”, “O Holy Night’, “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing”. Add to childhood memories the true believer adulthood torch he carries as leader of a seasonal sing-a-long for the past nine years. His tenure as master of ceremonies for the Ho-Ho-Holidays brings him full circle with the recent release from The Pinkerton Raid, Jagged Vacance: Winter Songs by Other People, Vol. 1. Following five full-length albums, Singer/Songwriter Jesse James Deconto steers The Pinkerton Raid’s focus towards darker, colder months (in the northern hemisphere) with the EP, the songman stating ‘I wanted to record winter songs that feel essentially human, that capture the loss and longing, regret and despair, the fallen leaves and cut trees, the death of the past that somehow carries hope and possibility for the future, the most basic joy of being together’.
While Christmas Past is a muse for The Pinkerton Raid, modern day Holiday tunes are on the roster for Jagged Vacance, the furthest they dig into the past lands on a date carved into the contemporary traditions tree, December 9, 1965. That was the first airing of A Charlie Brown Christmas, and it is celebrated once again with the inclusion of “Christmas Time is Here” on the EP. The song cycle begins on Jagged Vacance: Winter Songs by Other People, Vol. 1with a cut from Bon Iver, “Holocene”, The Pinkerton Raid making the song glisten like a field of newly fallen snow. Joni Mitchell’s “River” flows with a strong undercurrent from the band while “Happy Xmas (War is Over)” shares John Lennon’s wishlist on a Folk Rock march. Jagged Vacance: Winter Songs by Other People, Vol. 1 exits with a rhythmic stroll over a Fleet Foxes track when The Pinkerton Raid harmonically tell the tale of “Winter White Hymnal”.
