The Folk music of The Paper Kites has a strong framework. The cuts on the Melbourne, Australia-based band’s recent release, If You Go There, I Hope You Find It, are built to fly high over the heavy beats, shouted vocals, and hard-edged realities of the Pop charts. The strumming is soft but supportive. Each note and rhythm that wraps around the words of The Paper Kites has a place and an individual role. If You Go There, I Hope You Find It, the seventh album release from The Paper Kites, brings the band full circle. In order to grow, slight changes are expected from any band set on keeping their base satisfied as they stretch for new ears and an expanded audience. On the recent release, lead vocalist Sam Bentley hears the group returning to their own roots. He shared that ‘this record feels like a band remembering what made them fall in love with playing music in the first place. Five friends, five musicians, rediscovering what made them want to do this together. A lot of these songs were written out at the farm we rehearse at, which has become a place of great direction and growth for us over the years. As such, the record has taken on much of the character of that place, and you’ll see it reflected in the colors and visuals surrounding the album. There’s a lot of the five of us in this record’, The gentle strums and rhythms of “Every Town” stay true to Folk music traditions as The Paper Kites kick against the regimented rules of tradition by adding a strong pulse courtesy of the triphammer drumbeat urging the track forward. Opening cut, “Morning Gum” begins the song cycle for If You Go There, I Hope You Find It on assured chord strums that confidently stride into the album, a true leader that collects the added instrumentation in a line behind its long strides over the arrangement. A rattle of rhythm starts the movement in “Shake Off the Rain”, its persistent patter forming a lazy groove that keeps the cut on track in its intention to ‘kick off the Blues, shake off the rain’. Acoustic guitar and banjo partner to lead the way into the revolving rhythms of “Borne by You” while tenderly plucked strings sparkle and fall around the hometown memories surfacing as they are calmed by the words of “Strongly in Your Arms”. The chord strums rush the groove along for The Paper Kites as they confess failings amid the hopeful dreams of “When the Lavender Blooms”, letting the sway slow to capture the heartfelt offerings found in “Deep (In the Plans We Made)” (by Danny McCloskey) Listen and buy the music of The Paper Kites from Amazon For more information, please visit The Paper Kites website The Blog Tags widget will appear here on the published site.
