The latest album release from Americana duo The Milk Carton Kids finds the pair sticking with their rock-solid formula of sturdy lyrics and solid melodies delivered in a whisper-soft package. It’s a gutsy move as the songwriting isn’t masked by theatrics or volume, or marred with over-production. Fortunately, for the ears of established and future fans, Lost Cause Lover Fool has standout songwriting.

Lines like ‘I was rich on the day that I was born, had the love of a mother, I had a home’ from “My Place Among the Stones” delivers inspiration on personal reflection, a heavy nod to being thankful. The Milk Carton Kids deliver a dose of Country Goth with banjo and slide guitar on “I’ll Go Home from Here”, a song thick with harmonies, while “Sad Song” is the upbeat one of the bunch, melodically fun and a reminder that music fans often have a deep, depressing cut kicking around their head as ‘there’s always a sad song living in my heart’.
