The Mallett Brothers Band are from Maine, and they sound like players from The Pine Tree State. Hearty tunes that come from the rough and beautiful land of the Northern New England. The Mallett Brothers Band latest release, Higher Up In the Hills, was born amongst a rural landscape, from the mountains to the sea. These are songs banged out at a front porch picking-party, the melodies loaded with flat picking and fiddle fills, while kicking things up a notch into the modern-day realm of Roots Rock. “Nothin’s Working” pulses to the life of chasing the eternal buzz, a chase that stops working. Legendary piano man, Chuck Leavell (solo, Allman Brothers Band, The Rolling Stones, Sea Level) kicks in on keyboards for “Dogs and Horses” for sonics that push the needle into big and dramatic; a cut ripe for radio. “Lighter” features trading fiddle and guitar in a Southern Rock Boogie cut, and “The Valley Reel” digs into that aforementioned old-time scene. “Caffeine” is a driving down the highway song that shuffles along as it nods to late night white lines flashing by, roadside eateries, and an endless cup of joe while “Home Cookin’” wreaks of small town rural living. These are songs written by sturdy siblings, Matt and Will Mallett and The Mallett Brothers Band, dudes that have likely combed the woods all over Maine and kicked around the Roots and Old-Time music scene most their lives.
