The Lumineers (from the album Automatic

The Lumineers (from the album Automatic available on Dualtone Records) (by Danny McCloskey)
Having achieved massive success with their debut album, and its equally chart-topping single, “Hey Ho”, The Lumineers have enjoyed a career with many of the band-building obstacles removed from the small business model that many Indie musicians experience. They became, and have maintained their status, of a Roots music success story. To the band’s credit, they have focused on, and stayed true to, the music that brought them to the party. The Lumineers releases have varied in storyline content and performance while maintaining the organic Roots sounds in the music. The Automatic title track for their recent release is a piano march backing a spoken/sung tale that gathers phrases to spark memories as The Lumineers strum campfire acoustic guitar chords to begin “Keys on the Table” as the music slowly layers to build the heft of the tune.

A hammered beat opens Automatic as first cut “Same Old Song” bursts into the album on the gallops of a rhythmic patter as words and music come from a sole piano backing and voice for the dreams of “Better Day”. The Lumineers count four to begin the confessions of “Antivan”, rush the rhythms to match raw requests in “You’re All I’ve Got”, and create a Roots music Pop gem with the radio-unfriendly title of “Asshole”.  As the members of The Lumineers, Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites, age, the natural progression of life colors all they do, particularly their songs. Automaticallows the duo to offer the new vulnerability of fatherhood delivered with the humor that has found a home in all of their material. A sparkle of notes flutter around the opening of “Plasticene” before the track finds comfort in a Rock’n’Roll beat to back its tale. Automatic closes its album doors on the slow, determined trudge of “So Long” as The Lumineers offer experiential advice.
