2/20/2026 The James Hunter Six (from the album Off the FenceThe James Hunter Six (from the album Off the Fence available on Easy Eye Sound/Concord) (by Bryant Liggett)
There’s not a hipper band than The James Hunter Six. The knock-out a throwback vibe that travels back to a day when Rock’n’Soul and R&B ruled the radio. Though that may seem Old School-retro, James Hunter and band make things as new as next week and cooler than the Fonz on the band’s latest in Off the Fence. “Two Birds One Stone” kicks the record off like an traveling Soul stage show when Hunter sings over a rough rumble-beat, and swinging, rough-around-the-edges rhythms. “Let Me Out of this Love” and “Here and Now” are both slow groovers, ready for a slow spin around the dancefloor, while “Ain’t that a Trip” finds James Hunter banging down with Classic Rock royalty as he pulls Van Morrison into his world. Van Morrison, a long-time supporter, and James Hunter, a one-time backup singer in Van’s band, in addition to its stellar cast the cut is super catchy. “Particular” is a piano heavy ballad that’s both lovely and lonely, and “A Sure Thing” has classic backing vocals and a steady, head bobbing backbeat groove; Hunter and his stacked band have created an instant classic. The James Hunter Six nail the formula; like finding a great beer, a great bottle of wine, or a great restaurant, you keep going back to the source because you know each sip, taste, or in his case, listen is always as great as the first time.
