Holy old-school. On their first release since 2017, The Down Hill Strugglers have made a record that sounds like its decades old yet Old Juniper is also as fresh as next week, an old-time celebration of original material. It is great. There’s the bouncy opener in “I’m Getting’ Ready to Go” that rolls into the instrumental “Battle Hollow”. “Picking Dandelions” has fantastic old-school harmonies that float over a meandering harmonica, “Pillow Stone” is another instrumental that’s jig worthy. Then there’s the Old Juniper title track, that has rural tones from what seem to be a field recording, complete with cricket ambience, and the trio proves that old-time music can have 21st Century subject matter via the cut “Old Phone Died”. That 21st Century subject matter rolls on in the closer “Let the Rich Go Bust” as the band references 2016 election day, while further reminding us that the rich don’t really care about anyone but themselves with lines like ‘let the poor man live and the rich go bust’. Old-time music remains timeless, its simplicity something that will forever remain fresh as long as there’s a front porch or festival ripe for a pick. The Down Hill Strugglers celebrate that timelessness, reminding us that certain feelings or attitudes whether it be toward love or politics remain timeless too.
