Galloping into All Hat, No Cattle, their latest release, LA-based Country Rockers The Doohickeys offer advice to an interested lover with “Rein It in Cowboy”. Like its fellow tunes on the album roster, the lyrics are all smirks and smiles while the backing beat hammers a rhythm bound for Honky Tonk glory. Twang and a wagon wheel sway cradle the bad news coming in “Farm Lawyer” while the sound of traffic signals a song for “City Folk”. “Too Ugly to Hitchhike” watches taillights fade in the distance on a train-track beat as “I Don’t Give a Damn About Football” shares its feelings on sports. The All Hat, No Cattle title track peaks behind the curtain of bravado and the spotlight falls on an after-work drama unfolding in “Mr. Fix-It”. A Cosmic Country brew of West Coast twang, smart story-lines, and tight harmonies, The Doohickeys have crafted a winner with their debut album. Jack Hackett and Haley Spence Brown met attending USC, partnering over a shared love of Country music and satirical comedy. The idea for an album surfaced and The Doohickeys enlisted Eric Corne as producer, entering the studio with a top shelf line-up of Los Angeles players to record All Hat, No Cattle. A dream provides the tale for “I Wish My Truck Was Bigger”, delivering it’s dream on a Country rhythm and keeping tires spinning under with “Can’t Beat My Old Beater”. All Hat, No Cattle keeps its fingers crossed for life’s breath in “Please Tell Me Your Sleeping” while The Doohickeys pen personal opinions with “I Can’t Dance” and “This Town Sucks”.
