The Devil Makes Three (from the album Spirits

The Devil Makes Three (from the album Spirits available on new West Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
The latest from The Devil Makes Three finds the band digging into drugs, their namesake devil, and difficult times. They back the tales on Spirits, their latest release, with classic acoustic Roots and an old-school parlor music flair. The album is a bouncy, acoustic romp that will keep feet moving whether The Devil Makes Three are singing about the hard, or happy parts, of life as they conjure up ghosts while doling out lyrical doses of observations on the human condition.
Starting off with a spaghetti western intro, Spirits begins the song cycle with “Lights on Me” before surf guitars introduces the title track. “Ghosts are Weak” is a bouncy Folk cut while “Half as High,” another story referencing drugs, asking the question ‘how come we have to take a bigger hit, just to get half as high?’. That less-for-more theme continues with the beautiful “Hard Times” as The Devil Makes Three state ‘they’ll charge you dollars while they’re paying you in dimes’. It’s a harsh welcome to 2025 and its gift baskets of empty promises and blame.
“The Gift” has a great, Wild West lounge riff to open the cut while “Divide and Conquer” has a bouncy Jazz overtones. The hit of the record is the hilarious/not-so hilarious tale in “I Love Doing Drugs”, a story where to which any active user or someone sober and in recovery can relate. Spirits is a killer album, with a band in fine form as they toy with subtle surf licks, hints of piano-less ragtime, and stripped-down boogie. The Devil Makes Three has always done a lot with a little as they dole out darkness and reality via shuffling, dance-tunes. (by Bryant Liggett)
