Willy Vlautin will break your heart. He’s done so via his previous band, Richmond Fontaine, he does so in numerous novels. Currently he’s doing so as songwriter and guitar player with Portland, Oregon’s The Delines. On their latest release, The Set Up, vocalist Amy Boone’s desperately exquisite vocals bring Vlautin’s stories of a worldwide community of humans to life. From characters that are good and bad, terrific and tragic, her vocals are the perfect vehicle to deliver a tough narrative over a sonically supportive backing band. The title track for The Set Up arrives in a three-part delivery that sets the theme the album as a collection of short stories. You’ll write your own script for the instrumentals as “Jumping Off in Madras” or “Getting Out of the Ward” are as much film score as song, while the rest of the sibling songs come off as chill chapters read from the same book. “Dilaudid Diane”, with its lonely piano and heavy harmonies, is a straight up street-life weeper, “The Reckless Life” is a cool lounge cut that reminisces of kid friendship that rolls down a sad road, and “The Meter Keeps Ticking” finds the band heading into R & B territory. Willy Vlautin can spin a tale, as these remain courageous stories from his pen. He is a voice for people beaten down by life, delivered with top notch arrangements. The instrumentation of cool keys and subtle horns provide a cool score for brutally, honest life stories. What some may call simple others will call real, as nobody is hiding behind studio tricks and bloated language. The Set Up has no fluff, no ambiguity, just tracks of heartache from a band staying true to themselves, and true to you.
