Willy’s Vlautin’s writing comes via a fantastic outlet. Two equally imaginative avenues, actually; one being his books, the other his bands. As leader of the now defunct Richmond Fontaine, and currently The Delines, he uses his bands to convey the unlimited stories rolling around his head, true to life tales that serve as a reflection of the glorious nature of life and all its baggage, good and bad. Vivid, sad, victorious, and wonderful, as in the case of The Delines, Vlautin is using a bed of Rootsy Soul to touch up his tales. Every release remains wonderful, including the latest in Mr. Luck & Ms. Doom. 
The record opens with the title track, a cut as lonely as some of its stories, a sparse acoustic guitar strummed with desolate chords as Amy Boone’s vocals kick in, followed by subtle keyboards; it is a great love story about ‘Mr. Luck and Ms. Doom, they never check out before noon’. The Delines reference classic American literature in a junkie tale via “Pony Boy” while “Left Hook Like Frazier” comes in on the upbeat and “Sitting on the Curb” is ripe for a dark lounge, a story of watching something terrible unfold and nothing you can do about it; dig into the lyrics for more. The harmonies in “Don’t Miss the Bus Lorraine” are spectacular, and “Maureen’s Gone Missing” with Boone’s half singing, half talking, ramps the story vibe up a notch, while musically it’s all cool groove under another heady storyline.
Musically, Mr Luck & Ms Doom is a soulful Roots sound, heavy on the keyboards, while lyrically it is all reality with little to no ambiguity. The Delines bring the music, the characters, and the stories within to life. Every song becomes that stage for a short story.  (by Bryant Liggett)
