The Cucumbers (from the album As You Hear Me (Songs from Hello George)

The Cucumbers (from the album As You Hear Me (Songs from Hello George) available as a self-release) (by Danny McCloskey)
Fading Country music star George Knott needed a hit. George met Barry Marcus, a younger man stumbling through learning to live as an adult and a hoped-for career in the music industry. Barry holds in his hand’s songs written by Daisy Steinberg. Among the tunes is the Daisy-written “There’s a Crop Circle on My Daddy’s Land”. The song catapults George Knott back to the top of the Country music charts, and the success creates a link that binds three fates into a chain of events. The story is contained in the novella Hello George, and the album, As You Heard Me. Both the story and album are a work of fiction, brought to the world by the combined efforts of Jon Fried and Deena Shoshkes aka The Cucumbers.

A book with music and music with a book. A spark was ignited for Jon Freid when he heard a demo recording of “There’s Crop Circle on my Daddy’s Land” by Deena and lyricist Vaughan Daniel. The inspiration formed the story for Hello George, with the companion album, As You Heard Me, released by The Cucumbers. The song that began the journey begins the song cycle for the album when “There’s a Crop Circle on My Daddy’s Land” kicks things off with the sway of its revolving rhythms. The double discs contain sixteen tracks that showcase the tracks that span the novella. “Reeling Feeling” talks a tale of love over rambunctious piano rambles and a hefty backbeat. A slow stroll defines the path through “I’m the Girls I Warned Your Mama About” as “Cut It Loose” cruises on a funky groove. “You Are the Sweetest Dream” drifts on a persistent beat accented with the sparkle of acoustic notes, “Delete” is a demanding rhythm undertow that propels the tune. “Hello Rainbow” is as bright as its namesake, and “Forever and Ever” languishes on a bed of wishes and jangle. The songs of As You Hear Me (Songs from Hello George) offer a diverse musical backing for stories that form a bond with the novella. The Cucumbers celebrate greeting-card holidays with “One Valentine’s Day” as determined strums paint a picture on the LoFi echo of “Waiting (Impressions of Chrysanthemums” as the band slowly move along “River of Time” and tap out a beat with percussion and a toy piano to tell the tale of riding the tiger in “Counting”.
