Certain ears may call the Bay Area band The Brothers Comatose Bluegrass while traditionalists may buck that definition. When TCB bang out a Bluegrass tune, they do so quite well, however a better descriptor may be ‘breezy California Roots Rock outfit’. On their latest, Golden Grass, The Brother Comatose dip into Bluegrass on a handful of cuts without being Bill Monroe traditionalists and play their own branded sound throughout Golden Grass. Those string band bangers include the clawhammer banjo heavy “Run Boy Run”, the fast-paced road ripper in “Blue Mountain”, and the front porch picker “25 Miles”. The album is both serious and irreverent. The irreverence comes via “The IPA Song” where the band touts dismay in the craft brew craze where they choose cheap canned brew over high alcohol and uber bitter micro-brews. They ‘don’t want to be sober but they don’t want a hangover’. “Huckleberry Wine” is a fantastic ballad that’s homey and warm, the same with “Runnin’ On Back to You” and they throw out a fantastic two-stepper in a nod to home in the “Hills of San Francisco”. The heavy harmonies, especially the cuts that feature Addie Levy’s soft backing vocals, mark The Brothers Comatose as a singalong band whether they’re delivering their brand of Roots music at a traditional picking festival or if they’re playing a dive bar. Golden Grass is music that’s plain fun.
