3/21/2026 The Black Crowes (from the album A Pound of FeathersThe Black Crowes (from the album A Pound of Feathers available on Silver Arrow Records) (by Danny McCloskey)
As a first song on A Pound of Feathers, their recent release, The Black Crowes come bearing a gift (of sorts). The album kicks off with a “Profane Prophecy” when the three-decades-in band enters the song cycle for the album on the power of unfettered Rock’n’Roll. The force of the first blush in A Pound of Feathers continues when “High & Lonesome” tumbles and rolls across the recording as “Cruel Streak” carves out a course on a sharp-angled rhythms. “Eros Blues” hushes in its intro, hinting at a power blast coming soon with hiccups of sonics before the tone of the tune slowly rises up to deliver a hammering punch. Summing up the experience, Chris Robinson displays how the years have done little to quell passion, stating that ‘we experimented more, and we wrote on instinct and how we were feeling in the moment. Rich brought a spontaneity to the record that I can’t describe, but it’s the best shit he’s ever done’. Brother Rich Robinson adds that ‘this album feels transformative to us. Going back to our roots, we felt that spark in the studio and how we work together. Lighting a fire that hits harder, more jagged but is still true to our musical essence’. Guitar jangle and a pounding psychedelia cradle the tale of “Blood Red Regrets” as a distorted riff leads a path like a Rock’n’Roll driven Pied Piper when it accents the short stabs of lyrics creating the story in “It’s Like That”. Acoustics play a back room jam to offer a harmonic shout out to “Queen of the B-Sides” as the polar opposite musical experience provides a bombastic beat to hammer out a “Doomsday Doggerel”. A Rock’n’Roll beat clears the dance floor for the stomping steps needed to “Do the Parasite!” as The Black Crowes read the “Pharmacy Chronicles” on lazy strums while they crawl over memories wondering “You Call This a Good Time?” as the band.
