The Band of Heathens (from the album Country Sides

The Band of Heathens (from the album Country Sides available on BOH Records) (by Bian Rock)

The Band of Heathens explore their rustic roots on their ninth full-length studio album, Country Sides. Combining the DIY-ethos of their Austin stomping grounds with the mellow southern California vibe of early Eagles, The Band of Heathens strike a smooth groove that washes over you like spring’s first warm breeze after a brutally cold winter.

“Good as I Can Be” is a standout Folk/Blues fusion that under-promises and over-delivers. Electric organ and acoustic guitar set a Laurel Canyon tone as the band confesses their faults. Singing ‘I might fuss a little, fight a little’ as they freely admit their shortcomings. Behind their flawed actions lie good intentions when the continue the story; ‘I crashed the car to save that stray dog. I know what it’s like to be lost and alone’. The Band of Heathens show they’re always willing to do what’s right even if it means doing a little wrong to get there. The warm tones and storytelling recall mid-70’s Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, and Lowell George-led Little Feat. If that’s as good as they can be, it’s far better than most.
Part Sister Hazel and part The Band, The Band of Heathens reside at the intersection of Country, Folk, and Rock. “Pleasing People” and “Take the Cake” effortlessly meld the energy of Rock with classic Honky-Tonk slide guitar. “High on Our Own Supply” and “Lead Don’t Follow” bolster lilting Folk melodies with pulses of Rock organ. The Country-forward tones of “No Direction” and “Just as Much” are accentuated by gentle Folk rhythms. “She’s the Night” and “Forever’s Not a Long Time” venture into Cosmic Cowboy territory. Turning to ballads, they show off their sensitive side in “Finish Something I Started” and “Letting Go”. The latter is a meditation on self-awareness and labels. BOH muse ‘I compare myself to everyone and I still hate to lose. Wrestle with the devil, you end up with the Blues”. If you’re always measuring yourself by others, you’ll never be at peace. The Band of Heathens urges you to let go and choose peace. Country Sides is the perfect soundtrack to that unfettered, peace of mind. (by Brian Rock)
