Tedeschi Trucks Band and Leon Russell

Picture
Tedeschi Trucks Band and Leon Russell (from the album Tedeschi Trucks Band and Leon Russell Present: Mad Dogs & Englishman Revisited Live at LOCKN’ available Swamp Family Music/Fantasy Records/Concord) (by Danny McCloskey)
Forty-five years after the original Mad Dogs & Englishman tour went down in history, Tedeschi Trucks Band partnered with Leon Russell to relive the sonic experience at Virginia’s LOCKN’ Festival. Featuring the same tracks as the original recording, Tedeschi Trucks Band, a family of their own, mirror the communal feel of the 1970 release. Joining TTB’s 12-piece ensemble, the album welcomed in a host of friends with Chris Robinson and Dave Mason coming in for “With a Little Help from My Friends”, Warren Haynes and Anders Osborne on board in “She Came in Through the Bathroom Window”, Claudia Lennear joining the band on “Girl from the North Country”, and Dave Mason returning for his tune “Feelin’ Alright” (joined by Anders Osborne).

Of the original tour, legend claims that Joe Cocker has let his backing group, The Grease Band, take time off after a grueling tour schedule. Joe’s manager had booked a tour and the singer was left in Los Angeles with no musicians. Tapping into (then) local piano man, Leon Russell, the pair assembled a band in under two weeks and set sail as a traveling hippie commune that played shows across the United States. The album became an equally legendary live effort, stacked with future members of Delaney & Bonnie as well as Derek & The Dominoes, Rita Collidge, and, of course, Leon Russell and Joe Cocker. Leon Russell takes the microphone for “Dixie Lullaby” as Rita Collidge sings, along with Doyle Bramhall II, on Leonard Cohen’s “Bird on the Wire”. Susan Tedeschi opens the album with “The Letter”, and she sings alongside Chris Robinson for “Space Captain” as single light shines on Leon Russell and his piano to close out the set with “The Ballad of Mad Dogs and Englishman”.
