Jukebox Rock’n’Roll rules the soundtrack of Never Be the Same, the recent release from Teddy Thompson. The collected songs are joined by intention rather than a second-hand overview of love, loss, and the tick-tick-ticking of time. While heading into the studio without a plan for Never Be the Same, Teddy Thompson soon realized that ‘it’s a phrase that, unconsciously, I used twice. And when I saw it on the page, I realized, this is the message of this album. Don’t ever be the same. Change. Grow! Even when the sentiment is, woe is me, I’ll never recover after that love or loss. The message is still, change. Don’t get too comfortable. Everything is temporary, so evolve or perish’.
The tension that arises as the pull of change drags us from our collective comfort zones is the muse for Never Be the Same. The songwriting legends of the Rock era were influences for Teddy Thompson as the songs on the album hold echoes Chuck Berry, Hank Williams, and Crowded House as well as the towering figures of music from the past six decades: Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, The Beatles, and British Folk icons Richard and Linda Thompson (Teddy’s parents). 

AM-radio Gold plays out in every not of “So This is Heartache” as Never Be the Same claims “Baby It’s You”, rides a heart-thump beat to back “Same Old Song”, and picks up the pace for the admonitions in “Make Up Your Mind”. A rhythmic rumble cruises underneath “I Remember” as Teddy Thompson draws a line with the battering beat of “I Need Real (Love)” and tenderly makes a wish in “Come Back”. Relating the “Worst Two Weeks of My Life” on a vintage Rock Pop rhythm, Teddy Thompson plays “The Game” on a cha-cha groove before exiting the album on the persistent seduction of “Same Old Song”.
