Tai Shan will push boundaries. While soft ballads keep Shan in the Folk music realm, subtle pulsing beats, a thick croon, and various melodies allow the Nashville-based musician to drift into a realm you can categorize as ‘outside of Americana’. A catch-all, yes, but an apt descriptor for Tai Shan’s latest in Wildflower Moon. A sturdy pulse introduces the album with “Road Back to Me”, a solid first track when she is joined by a pushing, yet kind, banjo on a hopeful opener. Ambient sound effects of birds fade out under a brushed snare drum push of “Wheels and Gasoline”, Tai Shan’s vocals and simple, sparse piano giving the cut an overall hush. “Jump on In” has a Big Easy street Funk vibe, “How it Flew (The Kite Song)” is a dreamy lullaby, and that bedtime notion is ever present, heavy as a tuckered-out kid’s evening eyelids on “Lullaby Rendezvous”. This duet is also a cut that remains ripe for a closing scene in a smoky cocktail bar, a score as you order a drink with an olive while lighting your last cigarette. The closer in “Sailing into the Sunset” is a cut that could play as the credits roll on a sad love-story, a drifting and dramatic closing from a song that’s cinematic from a record that’s equally dramatic.
