Pondering life and reaching a decision about where they land on the ladder, Sweet Petunia liken themselves to a “Grub” on a dreamy melody. Propelling the beat with silver strings, the band support the claims of “I Will Run” with an equally moving rhythm. These songs, and more, are collected on Foggy Mountain Mental Breakdown, the recent release from Sweet Petunia. The Boston-based duo met while attending Berklee College of Music, blending the influences of Richmond, Virginia’s Celtic and Old-Time music sounds that were background for Mairead Guy with the sing-along-to-the-radio life-lesson harmonies of Maddy Simpson. The mix of the pair’s vocals is mesmerizing, and is showcased on the Sweet Petunia debut, Foggy Mountain Mental Breakdown. Folk music soundtracks the stories on the album; the tunes a tribute to the genre when Sweet Petunia offer a satchel full of songs as a homage to traditions. A slowly rolling rhythm is the pulse for “Nothin’ Yet” as a sad collection of notes satellite around “Wilting” and bright picking sparkles for the entry into “Heels”. Opening the album high-stepping, Sweet Petunia blend songs with “Kennedy Rag/Clementine”, introducing “Hal” on a runaway freight train rhythm as they untangle strings to ground “In David’s Living Room”. The voices of Sweet Petunia perform gymnastics for the story in “Good Part” as the duo hush the melody to let voices soar over “Guise” before the pair exit Foggy Mountain Mental Breakdown with the observations of “Puke”.
