Susto Stringband may be just the band for the Bluegrass purists. Not that there’s not enough traditional Bluegrass bands around (yes, but there’s always room for more). Some fans of the original founders of the genre may turn their backs to the Jam Band leanings or the Berklee School of Music shot in the arm Bluegrass has received over the last couple decades. Susto Stringband (Volume Two) finds the sometimes Indie Rock band firing up their stringed section instruments and digging into Bluegrass, and its Old Time Music, Gospel, and Blues influences in a manner which Bill Monroe would approve. 
Susto Stringband offer up harmonies straight out of the gate, “Glory Land” is a heady Gospel number where instruments, save for voices, are left behind. The Gospel soundscape continues with “Diamonds Icaro”, a cut as traditional as it gets, Morgan Wade adds thick and angelic vocals on the heavy “Hard Drugs”, a cut of sordid dreams, laments, and love that cuts out too quickly. A loaded and bouncy fiddle gives the instrumental “Work Away” a Celtic vibe. Then there’s a cut like “Last Chance Linda”, a tune where the lyrics draw out a wonderful tale about a gal who knows her way around Old Time Music and String Bands; a sibling to great songs that tell musical tales heard in Classic and Southern Rock.
File Susto Stringband (Volume 2) under Bluegrass, then give this record a green light to lean into Country circles, as its appropriate in both places. (by Bryant Liggett)
