Sunny War has a killer croon along with an intuitive taste in the selection of musical partners. The guests for her latest release include players from the Old School and political Punk world; their contributions icing on the musical cake of Armageddon in a Summer Dress. The album bucks any and all musical trends.
The record comes charging out of the gate via the album opener “One Way Train”. Sunny War’s voice, and her vocal, is the first thing you’ll hear, rattled off at a furious pace, the lyrical verses giving way to thumping wall of sound. “Bad Times” is a cut with a casual bounce while “Ghost”, with its casual vibraphone and drifting organ, floats across an audio world of tripped-out lounge music.  While she will certainly stand on her own, and does not need any big names to boost her reputation, Sunny War taps A-list partners for the recording of Armageddon in a Summer Dress. “Walking Contradiction” is a look into what she musically digs, pulling in Crass’s Steve Ignorant as she drops her own definitions of Punk. Valerie June is a solid vocal partner in “Cry Baby” while Sunny War shares the microphone with X’s Jon Doe on the Folk-leaning “Gone Again”. 
The closer in “Debbie Downer” is a cut loaded with fuzzy guitar breaks that live under, and between, her vocals as it treads into the West African, Psychedelic realm.  The best records are the ones that buck trends; you would never describe this as ‘straight ahead’ anything, and therein lies the beauty, as Armageddon in a Summer Dress is a record that throws some solid and oh-so welcome curve-balls.
