Sunny Sweeney (from the album Rhinestone Requiem

Sunny Sweeney (from the album Rhinestone Requiem available as a self-release) (by Danny McCloskey)
Sunny Sweeney has a knack of sorting through the thoughts taking up way too much space in our heads and putting those images of insecurity, hopelessness, and visions of a way through into words and music. That’s the muse for Rhinestone Requiem, her latest release. Sunny Sweeney opens the album as the light of day mixes with the taste of Tequilla from the night before in “Find It Where I Can”; making a plan for the day. She decides to face her own denial (‘I just keep right on pretending that what you been giving me is real’) with a defiant answer (‘I need a home away from home’). The sibling songs on Rhinestone Requiem walk the same road when “Is Tonight the Night (I Make You a Memory)” questions leaving and finds the courage to ‘make you a memory the way that I should’ as “Traveling On” takes a snapshot of poor decisions down at the local Greyhound station and a Country Waltz spins a sad song with “Half Lit in ¾ Time”.
The songs of Sunny Sweeney are honky tonk friendly, with Rhinestone Requiem stacking the jukebox with songs to keep the patrons at the bar as it encourages boots to kick up some sawdust. A hearty backbeat supports the claims of done-me-wrong with “I Drink Well with Others” as the album stands tall to own Sunny Sweeney a special spot in “Houston Belongs to Me” and hammers down a beat to tell the tale of “Last Hard Bible”. Sunny Sweeney waves the banner high for honky tonk songs that are playlist keepers once the neon lights flicker out. She draws the line in “Waiting for a Reason to Stay” as Rhinestone Requiem finds its happiness with “As Long as There’s a Honky Tonk” while Sunny Sweeney takes pleasure in pocketing “Diamonds and Divorce Decrees” stating ‘I’m stuck between I do and I’ll never to that again’.
