They drop ballads without the sap, classic that never becomes a 70’s Southern Rock jam. That’s the operating procedure for Chattanooga’s Strung Like a Horse, where on their latest release Dirt the band flirts with heavy emotion on the slow-burning ballads, and Crazy-Horse inspired feedback via a touch of grunge on the Rockers. Strung Like a Horse open with subtle twang and punchy power on “Dry Ground”, setting a pace for Dirt with its Rock’n’Roll groove. “Criminal” kicks off with frontman Clay Maselle’s dream-like vocals, ultimately giving way to a musical break that plays out like an animated score. “Water to the Seed” opens up with Rock power chords, closings out the track with even more power chords, wrapping in a big drama. Cuts like “Best Friend” and “Find Your Way Home” move at a patient and relaxed pace, that relaxed pace still vividly dramatic; the latter toys with jam at the end without meandering, offering up the wonderful line ‘looking for meaning in the words of your song’. It’s a personal cut. The Crazy-Horse experimentation returns on “Old Man from Golden”, a cut that rolls along as a spoken word Beat poetry over a loose jam while “Falling Balloon” starts as a quite lullaby, complete with musical saw, before blasting into a wall of sound at a minute and forty seconds in. While overall the tempo remains on the slower side, Strung Like a Horse still exhibit power; the strength is in their contrast, as Dirt keeps its own pace while the band seamlessly move from ballad to banger.
