10/25/2025 Steve Martin and Alison Brown (from Safe, Sensible, and SaneSteve Martin and Alison Brown (from Safe, Sensible, and Sane on Brown Knows Music, 40 Share Productions, Compass Records Group) (by Danny McCloskey)
There is a major announcement on Safe, Sensible, and Sane, the recent release from the musical combination of Steve Martin and Alison Brown. “Bluegrass Radio” blares out the message that the singer(s) have made the top of the chart for the genre. While numbers two, three, and five barely caused a ripple, the #1 position was magic. Steve Martin steps up to the mic and describes the events that have transpired since he ascended the chart and parked his song way up at the top. A mixture of top shelf Bluegrass playing and a patented dead-pan are the words and music when Steve Martin and Alison Brown deliver their debut. A long list of friends stop by the studio when Safe, Sensible, and Sane welcomes Jackson Browne, Indigo Girls, Vince Gill, Aoife O’Donovan, Tim O’Brien, Della Mae, Jason Mraz, and others into the album. Vince Gill, solo artist and current member of the Eagles, joins the pair as he tells the tale of loss in “Wall Guitar (Since You Said Goodbye)” while Indigo Girls’ harmonies support the advice in “Girl, Have Money When You’re Old” as Aoife O’Donovan, alongside I’m With Her bandmate Sarah Jarosz, sing a song for “Micheal”. Steve Martin and Alison Brown ease into the album with the gentle strums of the instrumental “Friend of Mine” with fellow Bluegrass band Della Mae joining in for the cheating story in “New Cluck Old Hen” and Tim O’Brien helps out on the touring tale of “5 Days Out, 2 Days Home”. The duo of Steve Martin and Alison Brown are a string band keeper. The sound of Safe, Sensible, and Sane is wrapped in the tones and textures of Bluegrass. They honor traditions on the release, the gentle musical interlude “Dear Time (Prelude)” gracefully blends into the big tent talk that shares warm memories of past lovers with “Dear Time” (featuring Jackson Browne) as Steve Martin and Alison Brown pick up the pace when they border the opening instrumental with playing of closing cut “Let’s Get Out of Here” as they exit the album on its hurried rhythms.
