An invisible thread ties us to the music with grew up as tight as an anchor chain. It was a time before having to choose a side in the musical popularity contest that forced us into genre-based categories. The songs we first heard were much more than just music. They were teachers and counselors, becoming friends as we navigated the social landmines of high school and staying by our sides as lifelong companions. Stephen Wilson Jr shares four of his favorite tracks from his musical formative years as he delivers his recent E.P. release, Blankets. Of the tunes he selected, he describes the four-tracks as ‘these songs are songs I grew up listening to. Warm blankets that I can always rely on to take me back. Blankets make people warmer than they were. That is the goal. These productions are intentionally lush and denser than the originals. Four covers to perhaps sort through in the hall closet to help get us through the night. Pull the string on the light’.
Orchestral strings and a thick guitar riff being the song cycle on Blankets when Stephen Wilson Jr covers Nirvana with “Something in the Way”. The music is delivered in layers, rising from simple, meditative beginnings into a sonic force. A cacophonous rumble of quiets to an unstoppable groove underneath his version of The Postal Service tune “Clark Gable” while strings sparkle like fireflies for Temple of the Dog’s “Hunger Strike”. Blankets closes out with Smashing Pumpkins’ “Tonight Tonight”, Stephen Wilson Jr turning the track into a grand spectacle of sound. (by Danny McCloskey)
