St. Paul & The Broken Bones (from the album St. Paul & The Broken Bones

St. Paul & The Broken Bones (from the album St. Paul & The Broken Bones available on Oasis Pizza Records/Thirty Tigers) (by Danny McCloskey)

Alabama Soul saviors St. Paul & The Broken Bones stayed on homeground, recording album number six in the Muscle Shoals legendary space, FAME Studios. The self-titled release returns the band to their Soul roots as they cruise on a funky groove with “Seagulls”, bouncing to the syncopated beat of “I Think You Should Know”, high-stepping into the uptown Saturday Night blast of “Nothing More Lonely”, and floating on a thumping bass guitar to shout out “Ooo-Wee”.
Heading back to FAME Studios was a return for St. Paul & The Broken Bones, putting the band in the same spot they had mixed their debut, Half a City, over a decade ago. The excitement and comfort of the environment can be heard, and felt, in every note of St. Paul & The Broken Bones. The band ask ‘what have you done to me’ as they flesh out the answers in “Stars Above”, wandering through the nighttime high on love under “Fall Moon”. A hard-hitting groove propels the rhythms of “Change a Life” as St. Paul & The Broken Bones take a table to enjoy “Sushi and Coca-Cola” on a caffeinated beat as they exit the album on the smooth Southern Soul sway of “Going Back”.
