Southern Avenue is a family affair. For those not in the know, the Memphis-based band are in fact family, those relations being Jackson sisters Tierinii (lead vocals), T.K. (drums), and Ava (violin, percussion) along with the lead guitar of sister Tierini’s husband, Ori Naftaly. Southern Avenue’s latest, titled Family, is the finest of the band’s offerings, a release where Gospel grooves meets Blues and Pop, a package of harmony heavy Roots music.
Big harmonies come clean in the animated opener, “Long Is the Road”, where those combined voices give way to silky smooth guitar fills as they keep a steady pace when the sister’s vocals back the lead in “Upside”. “Found a Friend in You” finds Family going just south of the Tennessee state line to recruit North Mississippi All-Star and resident Luther Dickinson for bass guitar, while Ava’s violin adds Cajun dance flair. The title track of Family is a 40-second dose of Gospel harmonies over quick slide guitar chops, “Rum Boogie” is a big rumpshaker with classic barroom piano, and “Sisters” digs into the trance inspired, dancefloor shaking ‘world boogie’ vibe done up by their North Mississippi neighbors. 
This is an easy on the ears effort where Gospel and Blues comes with a Funky Pop vibe. (by Bryant Liggett)
