Indie Roots music, slacker Folk, or front porch jam grooves are all appropriate descriptors for Skyman. Recorded under the band name Sounding Arrow, the release is a solo effort from Scott Kinnebrew. Skyman is a wonderful dose of Psychedelic Folk (another apt descriptor), and a laidback effort that’s a perfect score for the solo or group hang. Listeners will be pulled right into Sounding Arrows world right from beginning of opening cut, “Do You Mean It?”; a story where you can see yourself bumming a smoke. It’s a fantastic slow-grooved singalong. “Modern Day Desperado” has a Western desert-noir vibe as Sounding Arrow dig into twisted Pop territory with the oooh-oooh’ing backing vocals of the catchy cut of “Lucky Shaman”. “Call Time 5AM” is a near-perfect ballad; quiet and quaint, personal, lonely and lovely as Scott Kinnebrew nods to his woman, and owns being a ‘Renaissance Man, I am the real deal’. “Tree Hug” is a drifter, a tripped-out Pop tune with stretched out vocals and floating guitar fills, “For My Baby” is Garage Rock R&B, and the dreamy tones return for the album closer “ZERO GRAVITY”. Gloriously weird enough for left of the dial radio, Sounding Arrow digs into the simple but complex soundings of a Mac DeMarco, and the equally tripped-out Folk of an Akron/Family, but this album is all Sounding Arrow aka Scott Kinnebrew. These songs are soft enough to file under Folk, but with all the trippy fills this thing can be at home in the Cosmic Country neighborhood.
