Sophie Gault (from the album Unhinged on Torrez Music Group) (by Bryant Liggett) Anytime a musician kicks their record up with a charged-up Buck Owens song is okay in my book. That’s a hearty cheer for Sophie Gault, a Nashville gal that can Country croon and strum power chords, and who on her latest, Unhinged, connects the dots between Country and Rock’n’Roll. The Buck Owens tune, “Loves Gonna Live Here”, has a solid charge that Bloodshot Records would have eyeballed 25 years ago, a Classic Country cut that is given an Alt Country treatment that’s clean and cool. Sophie Gault drops a Pop bounce into “Pocket Change”, and more Rock for “Stop Breaking Down” while the title track is an attitude-heavy, Roots-thick stacked with Blues guitar fills; it is swampy good. “Stowaway” has some jangle underneath the Rock chords, and is a cut with a bit of an 80’s vibe hidden beneath some distortion while the pulser “Whiskey Would Help”; a cut that would win that not-yet minted under-the-radar Roots and Country award from the Country music crowd. Sophie Gault would be on the podium. “Last Call Rock and Roll” is anthemic, big and catchy, and the album closer, “Is There Anyone Out There”, finds Gault covering, and recruiting, the great Gurf Morlix for the recording. It’s slowed down and heavy, a great nod to both the inspiration and contribution. Sophie Gault is the full package, from her catchy vocals to stacked band, she’s a Rock gal in a snap-button shirt, and a Country woman in an Indie Rock world.
