Sierra Hull is a dreamy balladeer and string shredding new-grasser, both sides of Sierra on full display in her latest release, A Tip Toe to High Wire. The album is a rip-roaring blast showcasing equal parts of the technical Blue- and New-grass picking alongside soft, heavily slowed down ballads. Sierra Hull and her bandmates digits are in shred mode for the blistering rippers. Her voice set to croon mode for the animated lullaby and lounge-style cuts.
The dreamy tunes come with the Folk-leaning “Muddy Water” or the wonderfully mid-tempo “Truth Be Told”, the latter introduced by a promising riff before Hull comes in with subtle, scatting vocals as she sings of silver linings. A Tip Toe High Wire then wraps up and exits with two tender closers, “Redbird” and “Haven Hill”.
Come for the ballads, stay for the shredding.
“Come Out of My Blues” is an inspirational track that starts off with a trance-heavy rhythm that ultimately builds into a New-grass ripper. “Lord, that’s a Long Way” hears Sierra Hull’s mandolin on wonderful display before a hot and heavy guitar break, the main, fun melody continuing to wheel back into the tune.  “Let’s Go” is a pulser that’s more 21st Century Indie Rock than summer festival sounds, and “E-Tune “ has pushy banjo and tripped out violin, a blast of 1970’s fusion hiding in Newgrass camouflage.
Guests like Bela Fleck and Lindsay Lou (among others) lend time and talent to the A Tip Toe High Wire, inspiring the ballads and the hyper string band music. It is Sierra Hull, and her solid company of friends, that continue to push Bluegrass into limitless places.  (by Bryant Liggett)
