The latest Shinyribs finds head rib Kevin Russell digging a bit into the past. Perhaps the stripped-down nature of Leaving Time helped spur the April reunion of Russell’s past band, or maybe Russell wanted to switch to some simplicity; while he’s left horns and backup singers behind, Shinyribs is still dropping the loose and funky, or at times slow and heavy vibe Russell has been doling out since the 1990’s.
The album opener could serve as a closer, “Leaving Time” finding Shinyribs offering a sad salute as it moves towards the sunset via a marching head-bobber. Anyone that is tired of people rehashing low-hanging fruit tunes have their feelings expressed in “Shitty Music”, a funky groover where Kevin Russell sings ‘I don’t wanna hang out with anyone, that listens to shitty music’. “Drinkin’ Night” is 2025 Classic Country, a true crying in your beer weeper, “Salt On My Tail” is Dirty Blues boogie, and “One Of These Days” is a groover, lyrically loaded with a fun wish-list.
Shinyribs slows it down for cuts like “Cry Your Way” and “Unrequited Love”, both full-on weepers; heavy and sad ballads perfectly placed between the good time and groovy tunes. Although stripped down the band is still stacked: pedal steel and keys driving the Country Funk, with Kevin Russell leading Shinyribs like the pied piper of a backyard party. Shitty music this isn’t. Leaving Time lives just outside the confines of the norm, sounds from a glorious world of the odd, fun, and funky. (by Bryant Liggett)
