Sherri Harding (from the album Storyland

The Muscle Shoals horn section adds accents to the songs on Storyland, the recent release from Sherri Harding. Stirring a musical brew of Soul, Blues, and R&B, Sherri Harding blends touches of diverse styles into a brand for her songs. She bids a welcome as she bemoans financial inaccuracies on “Rainy Day” and slides into island Jazz rhythms for a caffeinated groove of lost love memories drifting across the storyline in “Dark-Eyed Junco”. Storms clouds match the atmospheric sonics that wrap around “Bad Weather” as Storyland hears the lovers in “Through It All” sing from their hearts while Sherri Harding follows Southern winds to the rhythmic rumble of “Down in the Shoals”.

While Sherri Harding helmed Storyland, the music was a collaborative effort. The songs, written by album producer Richard Cooper, were given wings by the string work of Muscle Shoals session guitarist Kelvin Holly (Little Richard, The Amazing Rhythm Aces). Sherri shared that ‘working on Storyland with Richard Cooper has been a thrill. We found our musical groove together and I couldn’t be happier. So many talented musicians and technical folks from both sides of the 49thparallel have come together on this record. I am so proud of this beautiful thing we have created’.

The Canadian songstress stayed on home ground for the Ottawa, Canada recording of Storyland, sending the album to Jimmy Nutt at The Nutthouse in Muscle Shoals, Alabama for mixing. A vintage Rock’n’Soul beat cruises underneath the warnings in “Don’t Push (On an Open Door)” while a piano ramble sets the peaceful pace for the request in “Tell Me Your Mine”. A rambunctious rhythm sets the marching groove that carries Sherri Harding “All Around the World” as she shares mental rambles, wondering “What’s the Matter (with My Heart)” before exiting Storyland on the title track.
