This is lounge music for the 22nd Century. Tunes with a mid- to slow- tempo, S.G. Goodman’s Planting by the Signs is a record that moves at its own pace while casually commanding its place in the Indie Rock world. S.G. Goodman is not attempting to wow listeners with instrumental theatrics, instead she wiggles into your ear via softly delivered yet thick melodies and great lyrics. Tracks like “Snapping Turtle” with the line, ‘when you’re a farm kid in a small town’ is one of many that stages the visual right out of the gate, setting forth the notion that you know these songs come complete with animated graphics. “Fire Sign” and “I Can See the Devil” are casual cuts with dreamy leanings, while Goodman digs into heartache on a cut like “Michael Told Me”, where she sings ‘I love you from Los Angeles, the place we started drifting from each other’. “Heaven Song” is the album closer where S.G. Goodman sings of neighbors and a Chevy Malibu, French fries, and dogs; it is vivid imagery and downright real. The aforementioned lounge reference comes via tempo and tone, all played out in support of ripe and ready tales loaded with D-E-T-A-I-L-S. Schmaltz this is not; while sentiment does exist, all flowing on a stream of consciousness narrative. (by Bryant Liggett) Listen and buy the music of S.G.
