Show of hands, who has thought to themselves ‘Hey, let me overthink this’? That was the wall Seth Walker faced when planning his current twelfth album release, Why the Worry. Too many options are as difficult to navigate as no idea at all. Balancing the recording with the near-constant influx of world news, deciding on the right steps to take seemed a distant goal. The worries kept piling up, and Seth found wisdom in a quote from Willie Nelson; ‘I’ve never seen worry accomplish anything… so I decided not to do it’. Seth Walker found a path into the studio, and the recording of Why the Worry, coining his own tag phrase when he realized ‘this work does not define me. This is not who I am forever. This is just a moment’. Adding to the hurdles, Hurricane Helene struck the mountains around Asheville, North Carolina where Seth is living, and he remembered the words on worry, and knew his role was bringing music in for the healing. Oliver Wood comes in for a co-write on the title track for Why the Worry, an album produced by Oliver’s bandmate in The Wood Brothers, Jano Rix, Brook Sutton, and Seth Walker. The song cycle begins when Seth Walker recalls “The Same Love That Made Me Laugh” as he walks a smooth stroll for the rhythms in “Hey Baby”. He becomes the crooner remembering his mistakes with “Somewhere Out There” and dabs Al Green’s “Take Me to the River” with a Blue Jazz patter. The same mindset that calmed him when he was juggling to many worries for his two hands to handle bring an ease to the songs of Why the Worry. A natural groove courses across the recordings, its mood summed up when the album exits with a Bobby Charles cover, “I Must Be in a Good Place Now”. The rhythms rumble when Seth Walker shares his love for his new home with “Up in the Mountain” and introduces “Midway Girl” on a jazzy shuffle. Why the Worry slides into memories of New Orleans in the rhythms of “Magnolia” and bounces on island beat for “Supernatural Thing” as Seth Walker welcomes his father, Scott Walker, into the studio to deliver the strings in “I’m Getting Ready”, a cut written by Michael Kiwanuka. The sonics of the album were credited to Seth Walker’s longtime trio, that includes Rhees Williams (piano, guitar) and Mark Raudabaugh (drums).
