Fusing her influences of Soul, Rock, Blues, and Country, Samantha Fish merges all the styles into her one brand on the recent release, Paper Doll. Whether intentionally or coincidence, the album art for Paper Dollfeatures a Samantha Fish headshot in four separate pieces of her whole face. The multiple sides mirror the multi-faceted sound of the album; “Don’t Say It” showing Samantha pulling riffs from her electric guitar for a softly delivered slice of Soul, “Lose You” is a blast of Rock’n’Roll, and “I’m Done Runnin’” is birthed in the Blues with a persistently solid backbeat for support. Samantha Fish expands her catalog with a fiery crop of new tunes with Paper Doll, her natural talent benefitting from lessons learned in her non-stop career. The album recording, sandwiched in the midst of a grueling touring schedule, is the first to feature Samantha’s touring band, Ron Johnson (bass), Jamie Douglass (drums), and Mickey Finn (keyboards). Band member Mickey Finn joins Samantha Fish for “Rusted Razor” as she is backed by a choir of voices to accent “Sweet Southern Sounds”. “Can Ya Handle the Heat” is Garage Rock glory while the Paper Doll title track walks on a stomping beat, “Off in the Blue” drifts with echoed sonics, and “Fortune Teller” crawls on a dark groove before it rises up over a funky rhythm that barrels across the album.
