Sam Morrow. The man, and his music, conjure a variety of images and sounds in the minds of the Roots music community. Roadhouse Blues. Check! Country Funk marinated in thick swamp water. Check!. Throughout a five-studio album career that began its cycle in 2014 (Ephemeral), Sam Morrow has shuffled a musical deck of audio cards, each soundtrack a guaranteed extension of Sam Morrow and his electric guitar. His recent release, Southern Boogie (album #6) adds another musical star to shine above his live performances. The music matches the album title. Sam Morrow steers the driving wheel of Southern Boogie into the album on a gnarly riff with the first cut, the guitar paving a road for “Cruisin’” to slide on in. He admits that ‘hard lessons get easier to take’ on the snaking sound of distorted notes for “Hard Lessons”, stomps into an introduction of “Juanita” with a few questions, and gives a shout-out to “Saturday Night” over a booming beat that identifies Southern Rock heroes in the crowd.
 
What seems like the machinations of a musical chameleon are a brand for Sam Morrow. His catalog offers diversity without reinventing the wheel. He easily slides between genres, marking each foray into a spinning circle of styles part of his own creative catalog. Sharp notes poke and prod when “Lucretia” walks onto the album while Southern Boogie struts on the swaying rhythm that defines the steps of “Put It in a Song”, slowing to an ambient groove that fractures and frolics in equal measure to the roller-coastering tale for “In the Bag”. Sam Morrow gives a nod to “South Texas Women” before exiting Southern Boogie on a banging beat that asks ‘please don’t go’ as it offers an olive branch aka “Wedding Ring”. (by Danny McCloskey)
