11/15/2025 Sabine McCalla (from Don’t Call Me BabySabine McCalla (from Don’t Call Me Baby available on Gar Hole Records)
(by Bryant Liggett) Sabine McCalla’s first proper full length is ripe for a smokey bar, an Indie Rock venue, or a festival stage. Don’t Call Me Baby is all that in a sultry package; a dish of smooth R&B, a dash of modern cocktail lounge sounds, and a helping of Indie Soul that comes from a laidback band led by a gal with a million dollar croon. She’s strong out of the gate, the album opener, “Sunshine Kisses”, features Sabine McCalla’s angelic vocals delivered strong and commanding as she tells someone on repeat ‘don’t call me baby, you don’t call me no more’. The cut also comes with a load of catchy, vocal fills that beef up the cut. “Louisiana Hound Dog” has a head-bobbing bounce in a cut that’s a load of funky fun, followed by “Two of Hearts” which is introduced with splashy, psychedelic guitar and a croon that digs into that aforementioned cocktail lounge vibe. “Baby Please Don’t Go” is ready to score a slow dance, “Deep River” sounds like it could be from five decades past, and the closer in “Lovely Lonely” brings us right back to that slow dance. Sabine McCalla is New Orleans but not the low-hanging fruit of what you expect from Bourbon Street. Yes, there’s slow Jazz and Blues but dig deeper for hints of Indie Gospel with a wonderful dose of hi-fi exotica, which comes as a welcome curveball.
