11/15/2025 Ruen Brothers (from the album AwoooRuen Brothers (from the album Awooo available on Yep Roc Records) (by Danny McCloskey)
The rhythm is like the sea pushing against the pilings of a pier when the Ruen Brothers ask “Can You Face the Water?”. The cut opens the recent release from the siblings, setting the standard for the mood and textures of Awooo with sparse instrumentation for vocals that rise up to reach for the rafters with choir boy grace. Vivid imagery partners with wiry fiddle riffs to poke the personal requests of “Sticks & Stones” while “Poison Down the Wire” puts a backbeat to echoey vocals as Ruen Brothers admit to “Seeing Ghosts” on a warbly B&W film soundtrack, and tell the tale of “Cabin on the Hill” on a steady rhythmic rumble. Foregoing theme for intention, Awooo was created for quiet misty nights, the brothers sharing that ‘Awooo is not just an album, it’s an experience—a whisper in the dark, a lone howl at the moon, a deep exhalation in the cold of night’. Ruen Brothers (England born, Louisville, Kentucky-based Henry and Rupert Stansall) recorded the album while living in California. “Desert Flowers” soundtracks a nostalgic moment for Ruen Brothers when a rare SoCal rainstorm reminds the duo of their native England. Awooo plays host to J.J. Cale’s “Mama Don’t” and drifts gently on the hazy ambience of “Transatlantic Nights” as Ruen Brothers gather a lifetime worth of decisions to strike a match to “Bonfire” and collect “Roses in the Desert” on a marching beat.
