Rollo White (from the album Highway 81 Revisited available on Powerful Thirst Music) (by Danny McCloskey)
Growing up in Washington, DC, Rollo White left the local music scene, heading for NYC. While his career took him north, his ear was tuned to Southern sounds. He carved out a niche for himself in the New York City Country music scene, balancing his own musical tastes with time spent in a multitude of diverse bands and genres. Rollo White steps into a solo recording career with Highway 81 Revisited, his debut. While backing other musicians, Rollo White honed his own songwriting, finetuning a natural ability for storytelling with masters-class higher education afforded by listening the records of John Prine. The results shine with influences and innovation on Highway 81 Revisited.
Recorded in Nashville, Tennessee, Highway 81 Revisited opens its doors on a bounce as Rollo White shuffles into the album following “The End of June”. The strains of classic Country kick up sawdust of honky tonk dancefloors with the slow spin request of “Shoot a Hole in My Heart” as Rollo White introduces “Folks I Know” over a solid backbeat while front porch picking backs the tale in “Death Ain’t Nothin’, Brother” and lists the daily actions of humans around the globe with “These Days”. Rollo White is an A-list songwriter, traveling back to his own past in “K-Mart Chandelier”, cruising on a Rockabilly rhythm thumping underneath “Do Me Wrong”, and following a fiddle into the advice of “Picnic, Lightning”. Highway 81 Revisited dances a waltz when introducing “The Mozart of Bad Ideas” and rides a thick groove for the “Natural Born Artist” as Rollo White is surrounded by a flurry of strings to champion “This Natural World”, exiting the album with a semi-title track in the story song “Highway 81”.
