Roger Street Friedman has his hands in every element of the Roots Rock-realm. On his latest, Long Shadows, he dips his toes into the waters of Blues and Jam, Folk and Gothic Roots; the album song roster is a perfect sampling as he’s a little bit of all of the aforementioned. “Rolling In Again” is a moving album opener, Friedman singing of a girl ‘rolling out and rolling in’ where the star of the cut is the killer slide guitar that dances throughout. That slide guitar returns dirty and rough on “The Banks of the Brazos”, the history lesson of the album that digs into a tale of the ‘Sugarland 95’, which is a tale worthy of further investigation. Quaint guitar picking introduces “The Land of the Leaf Blower and The Mighty SUV”, a soft and animated cut where Friedman sings ‘all us white people are just about as safe as can be in the land of the leaf blower and the mighty SUV’. Satire is wonderful, and this is a cut where it is laid on thick. “Without a Fight” comes with a dash of attitude. The album closes out with a pair of slowed down ballads in “Snow Blind” and “Lo and Behold”, the latter drifting around thanks to floating pedal steel guitar. The ingredients for Singer/Songwriter include both balladeer and storyteller, two necessary components of which Roger Street Friedman has plenty.
