9/13/2025 Rodney Crowell (from the album Airline HighwayRodney Crowell (from the album Airline Highway available on New West Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
At this point in Rodney Crowell’s career, he has explored every nook and cranny of the Roots music world. It’s a broad sound of Country, Roots, and all variations of the Alt- and Indie- sounds. He has kept wonderful company while adding to the Country Roots Rock canon for decades, his latest in Airline Highway rolling all around the many facets found in the genre of Country. A great big riff kicks the record off on “Rainy Days in California”, a steady Rocker of a cut where Lukas Nelson lends a hand. There’s a beautiful and dreamy ballad in “Sometime Thang” but the record shines in the groovers and movers. “Some Kind of Woman” has a great slacker Boogie vibe on a cut that treads into R&B territory and “Twenty-One Song Salute (owed to G.G. Shinn and Cleoma Falcon)” is for taking a spin on the dancefloor. It’s jazzy and groovy with Crowell almost scatting out vocals, throwing out a ‘Be Bop A Lula’ and referencing ‘blue suede shoes’. It’s a Rocker, quickly followed by another mover in “Don’t Give Up On Me.” Rodney Crowell is a Roots Rocker, with Airline Highway skirting around the echoes of the Paisley Underground while also digging into Roots Boogie. This is an album that gives Crowell more Alt Country cred while welcoming A-list company with the aforementioned Lukas Nelson, Ashley McBryde, Charlie Starr, Larkin Poe, and Tyler Bryant.
